At a glance, slip covered furniture adds a grace to a room, a subtle feeling of non-conformity, a light touch of imperfection. And a rough textured table next to it completes the picture. So this is the very foundation of a design line called Shabby Chic.
Rachel Ashwell founded Shabby Chic in 1989 with a philosophy on beauty, comfort, and function. She began in California by featuring washable furniture slip-covers and flea market finds to highlight decor.
Beauty and comfort and all its little imperfections and “the allure of time-worn objects” are the cornerstones of Rachel’s Shabby Chic brand.
Today, Ashwell has Shabby Chic Couture flagship stores in Santa Monica, California, SoHo, New York and London’s Notting Hill neighborhood. She is ever-expanding her line of bedding, furniture, accessories and vintage items. In 2004, with an exclusive partnership with Target, Ashwell brought Shabby Chic elegance to a wider audience, nationwide, at affordable prices.
